Acme Business Association Adopts New Logo

ACME, Mich., August 7, 2014 --- Recently, the Acme Business Association adopted a new official logo for the organization.  The new logo is much brighter than the previous one and the design has bold graphics with vivid yellow, blue and green.  (See the logo in the upper right hand corner)

The yellow denotes the brightly shining sun.  A light shade of blue represents the sky, while a darker shade is for the clear waters of East Grand Traverse Bay plus the sparkling streams and creeks that flow through Acme. Green suggests the verdant woodlands, rolling fields, and orchards that grace the township’s 25.3 square miles.  The graphic curve through the middle of the logo alludes to the 10 miles of East Grand Traverse Bay shoreline along the township.

“Our membership decided it was time to update the Association’s logo to better reflect the natural attributes and vibrancy of our beautiful area,” said Rob Evina, Vice President of the Association. “We considered several designs and we’re very pleased with the final version’s look and way it connotes the vitality of Acme.”

The Williamsburg Theater is pleased to announce the next performance in their ongoing 'New Horizon' concert series featuring Peter, Paul & Mary Remembered, the tribute band, with a show set for Saturday evening May 18th, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.  Launched in 2010, their shows have attracted SRO crowds of both young and old.  Doc Probes, Donna Wilson Probes, Jim Hawley, along with bass player, Dave Swan have combined talents to offer a walk down memory lane with songs of the famous trio who captured hearts the world over for more than four decades.

The group has transcribed each Peter, Paul & Mary arrangement in order to duplicate the exact sound that captured the hearts of listeners worldwide.   As one fan put it, “If I close my eyes, I am transported back to 1966 and I can picture exactly where I was when I wore the grooves off my Peter, Paul & Mary albums.”

The idea of putting together a Peter, Paul & Mary tribute emerged when Jim, Doc, and Donna were jamming together after a big family dinner.  Donna started singing an old PP&M favorite and a blend of multi-layered harmonies erupted spontaneously.  Jim & Doc’s guitar playing fused perfectly.  It became clear as the three began to explore more songs, that the synergy between them was remarkable.  “We are all steeped in the music of this era and it flows through our veins,” says Donna.  “Putting together this mix of old favorites feels as comfortable and familiar as lounging in my easy chair.”

More about the band:

Jim Hawley has won the hearts of audiences from coast to coast and spent many years in the big time arena of popular music opening for acts such as Jimmy Buffett and Steve Miller.  Following a successful career as a recording artist and national touring musician, Jim moved from Nashville, Tennessee to Traverse City two years ago with his wife, Annie, and son, Jimmy.  He is building a large following of local fans and appears regularly in numerous venues in the area.

Donna Wilson Probes began singing with her father at age 12.  Following her love of traditional music, she was the founder of the Grand Rapids Folk Arts Center.  She has performed on stage across the state of Michigan in various ensembles including Daddy Frank & Mama, The Muscat Ramblers, Better Than Nothin’ Band, and Family Reunion.  She plays guitar, lap (mountain) dulcimer, mandolin, and autoharp.  She combined a B.A. in Music and an M.B.A. into a multi-decade career in arts management. She has also taught music lessons, written and produced radio jingles, and done extensive studio singing.

Doc Probes started playing piano for church revivals when he was eight.  His love of music lead him to Interlochen Center for the Arts, where he attended both the Camp and Academy until High School graduation.   As a bassoonist, he earned his way through medical school playing in symphonies.  As a strong solo vocalist, he is also highly accomplished on guitar, bouzouki, piano, and concertina. He played for many years with Kinsfolk, a family band that performed across Michigan and currently leads his own family band, Cherry Blossom Ramblers, which includes his wife, Donna.

This concert by Peter,Paul & Mary Remembered will surely make for delightful evening of music mixed with a bit of nostalgia. It will be a fine day in May with this performance. The show is set Saturday May 18th, 2013 at the Williamsburg Theater, which is located at 4230 M-72 East, Williamsburg. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.  Tickets are available at Oryana Food Cooperative, Brilliant Books, and in Acme at Ace Hardware or the Stained Glass Cabinet.  For tickets or more information call: 938-2181.

2013 brings a new direction for the community of Acme.  It’s been years since the community has seen any growth and a positive feeling about its future.

Acme will see the opening of a new Goodwill store on M72 later this spring.  The long awaited Meijer’s project is gaining tracking and should be moving forward soon.

These projects will be designed to positively impact the community and keep Acme heading in positive direction.

The challenges over the last 8 years have been difficult. But challenges must be relevant to our community needs and wants.   The Acme Business Association is working in a positive direction with the New Township leaders along with building solid membership base to help bring that economic contribution to the Acme Community.

Acme Business Association would enjoy hearing your thoughts about your community and what you feel is the right direction.  WE want to know, because we want to help take Acme where YOU want it to go!  Let’s work together to help Acme once again thrive.  You can reach us at [email protected] or check us out on Facebook.

Happy Days are Hear Again

Happy Days Are Here Again.   Let The Good Times Roll.  These are the feelings the residents of Acme Township have not heard in years. With the recent election this past summer, there is a renewed feeling of optimism among the local community.

The Acme Business Association recently had the opportunity to have an open Q & A session with the newly elected board of Acme Township and discuss many of the issues facing the Township.

Topics ranged from the current progress with the Shoreline Project to recent Placemaking and how this will blend in with the business community and the shoreline project.  And an update on the Village of Grand Traverse Development.  Now known as the Grand Traverse Town Center.

The intent of the meeting was to open up a positive dialog with the newly elected officers which have been lacking in the township for years.  We all know Business and Government don’t always see eye to eye.  But, the business community is looking  forward to working with this newly elected group.

Acme Business Association would enjoy hearing your thoughts about your community and what you feel is the right direction. WE want to know, because we want to help take Acme where YOU want it to go! Let’s work together to help Acme once again thrive.  You can reach us at

Spring Brings Optimism

Welcome to a series of editorials about the future of Acme Township through the heart of the community. Were hoping to improve the quality of communications at the same time provide comments from the residents on what they would like to see for their community.

As you may know, it’s an election year and people are once again talking about what’s important for our community. You the residents will play important part in the decision process over the next several years. With this series we hope to communicate thoughts and ideas that will help move Acme into a healthy and vibrant community.

One of the major steps toward a healthy community has already started.

For those of you that have been following the on again off again Village of Grand Traverse Development for Acme, you know it’s been a very difficult time for all those concerned. But this project, the Village of Grand Traverse, fits nicely into the Grand Vision Plan for the Grand Traverse Area, at the same time providing needed jobs and an increase in tax revenue for the area.

As business owners we’re starting to hear people talk about new opportunities, and growth, and services, and community events, all right here in out beautiful Acme area.

At the same time they are still concerns about where the current leadership wants to take us. That’s why we’re hoping to develop a communication tool to discuss these issues with the current and future candidates. The ABA will be hosting a series of candidate forums to help better educate the community to make a positive choice in this fall’s election.

Acme Business Association would enjoy hearing your thoughts about your community and what you feel is the right direction. WE want to know, because we want to help take Acme where YOU want it to go! Let’s work together to help Acme once again thrive!

You can reach us at [email protected], or check us out on Facebook.
